This policy explains how BeezGuard (“BeezGuard”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses and protects information when you use the BeezGuard mobile app and this website (together, the “Service”). By using the Service you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account information: your name, email address and password (stored only in encrypted, hashed form) when you create an account.
- Photos and videos: images and videos of bees and hives that you capture in the app or choose from your device so they can be analysed.
- Hive records: hive names, notes and inspection history you save in the app.
- Messages: anything you send us through support, email or the contact form.
Information collected automatically
- Device information: device model, operating system version, app version and language.
- Usage and diagnostics: which features you use, crash reports and performance data, to keep the app working and improve it.
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, phone calls, SMS messages or financial information.
2. App permissions
- Camera: to take photos and record videos of your bees and hives for detection. The camera is only used when you open the capture screen.
- Photos and videos (media access): so you can choose existing images and videos to analyse. We only access the files you select.
- Internet: to analyse media, sync your account and send diagnostics.
You can turn these permissions off at any time in your device settings.
3. How detection works and what happens to your media
When you analyse a photo or video, BeezGuard uses a machine-learning model to detect varroa mites; distinguish honey bees from wasps, hornets and beetles; and identify queen, worker and drone bees. Your media is sent over an encrypted connection to our servers for analysis, and the results are returned to the app.
We store your media and results in your account so you can view your history. We do not use your photos or videos to train our models unless you turn on the “Help improve BeezGuard” option in settings, and you can turn it off at any time.
4. How we use your information
- To provide detections and show your results and history
- To create and manage your account
- To fix bugs, prevent abuse and keep the Service secure
- To understand how the app is used and improve it
- To reply to your questions and send important service notices
- To meet legal obligations
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising.
5. Who we share information with
We share information only with:
- Service providers who host our servers, store files, process analytics and crash reports, and send email on our behalf (for example Google Firebase and Google Cloud). They may use the information only to provide services to us.
- Authorities when required by law, or to protect the rights, property or safety of our users or others.
- A buyer or successor if BeezGuard is involved in a merger or sale, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.
6. How long we keep information
- Account information, media and results: until you delete them or delete your account.
- Diagnostics and crash data: up to 12 months.
- Support messages: up to 24 months.
- Backups: overwritten within 90 days of deletion.
7. Deleting your data
You can delete individual photos and videos in the app, or delete your whole account in Settings → Account → Delete account. You can also request deletion without the app on our account deletion page.
8. Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Access is limited to people who need it to run the Service. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you if a breach affects you, as the law requires.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you and get a copy of it
- correct inaccurate information
- delete your information
- object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent
California residents: under the CCPA/CPRA you have the rights above, plus the right to know what categories of personal information we collect and to not be discriminated against for using your rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in the CCPA.
EU, EEA and UK residents: we process your information to provide the Service (contract), to improve and secure it (legitimate interests), and where you have given consent. You may complain to your local data protection authority.
To use any of these rights, email privacy@beezguard.com. We'll respond within 30 days.
10. Children
BeezGuard is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. International transfers
We are based in the United States, and your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. We use appropriate safeguards for these transfers.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll change the “Last updated” date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the app or by email.
